Why the Newspaper Project Is Valuable for PSLE Students
About 4 years ago, TF started the newspaper project for our P5 & P6 students. The aim was to ensure that our students would get some meaningful reading done during the June and December school holidays. With the changes in the PSLE English from 2025, this project has become even more crucial for all upper primary students. As PSLE English standards continue to rise, students must learn to think critically, write clearly, and stay informed about real-world issues. The Newspaper Project is an excellent way to build these essential skills in a structured and engaging manner. Here are three key reasons why this project benefits Primary 5 & 6 students.
1. Strengthens Vocabulary and Language Awareness
Regular exposure to newspapers helps students encounter a wide range of high-level vocabulary, formal sentence structures, and clear writing styles. These are exactly the features required in PSLE English Paper 1 and Paper 2 (Comprehension Cloze passages.) When students read articles several times a week, they naturally absorb new phrases and learn how writers organise information. This improved language awareness translates into better compositions, stronger situational writing, and more accurate comprehension cloze answers.
2. Builds Critical Thinking & Real-World Understanding
The project requires students to choose articles that genuinely interest them. This encourages independent thinking and curiosity—important skills tested in PSLE comprehension, especially in inferential questions. By focusing specifically on Singapore-based articles, students also develop a stronger understanding of local issues such as community initiatives, environmental challenges, safety concerns or government policies. This background knowledge is extremely useful when tackling composition themes or Oral SBC questions that are grounded in everyday Singapore life.
3. Improves Presentation & Reflection Skill
Presenting the chosen articles in class teaches students how to summarise information, explain their opinions, and reflect on what they have learnt. These skills build confidence and help students articulate their thoughts clearly—abilities that support oral communication, a key PSLE component. Reflection also deepens understanding, as students must explain why an article stood out and how its message applies to their own lives. These skills are more important than ever with the changes in the PSLE Oral component.
Below are the simple steps you need to have your own holiday newspaper project at home. We hope that this blog post has inspired you to start reading the newspapers today.
