Our P4 students write a composition on a weekly basis. This is always done in the first part of the lesson. Planning and discussion take about twenty minutes of the lesson, and students are then given forty minutes to write out their compositions. After a short break, they move on to Paper 2 components in the second part of the lesson. Not everyone loves writing compositions but our TF students persevere and work hard weekly. So, when we hear that a student has done well in Paper 1 for the end of the year it makes us happy for them.
To celebrate our students’ hard work, we will put up some great P4 SA2 compositions and discuss why each student scored well in the examination.
The composition below is from one of our Hougang branch students, J, who scored 18/20.
Here are 3 ways why he aced his composition examination.
Logical & Accurate Descriptions
He chose the game of basketball for his composition theme. The terms and descriptions he employed in describing the game are both logical and precise.
We tell our students that if they choose to write about a sport, they have to make sure that it is one that they are familiar with and they can use accurate and logical vocabulary in their compositions.
J also used descriptions to add excitement at the crucial parts of the story.
Creating a problem and a dilemma
J created a problem in his story by writing about a strong opponent that his team needed to beat at all costs. His main character was also faced with a dilemma mid-way through the game – should he help one of his opponents who was injured or should he help his team win the game?
Creating problems and a dilemma in a composition will lend an air of excitement to the story and allow the main character to resolve the problem and eventually learn an important lesson.
Develop the theme
When students start their P4 year, they are faced with writing compositions with a given theme. Many times, P4 students do not realise the importance of theme development and barely develop the themes in their compositions. At TF, we remind our P4 – P6 students of the importance of theme development every time we work on a composition. Theme development is essential in PSLE Paper 1. Students must remember never to go off point regardless of the theme given to them.
J has done this well in his composition by describing the act of sportsmanship and mentioning it at the end of his story.
Below is J’s P4 SA2 composition. Congratulations to J for a job well-done!

Showing Sportsmanship
“Come on! Let’s go!” I muttered excitedly. My school was participating in the National School Games Basketball semi-final, and we were in the lead. We were competing against Larry Mack Middle School. We were destroying them! We scored hoops after hoops after hoops after hoops, and we were leading by ten points.
Beep! The scoreboard updated and the game had just ended. We scored twenty-seven to sixteen. My teammates and I were beaming from ear to ear as we went to a bench and took a water break before the finals.
As the final round was about to begin beads of perspiration trickled down our foreheads. We knew that there was no time to make any mistakes. This time we were up against Sacksville Middle School. Last year, they shredded us and blew us away with a fifty-six to zero, and we did not want it to happen again.
Beep! Beep! The referee blew the whistle, signalling the start of the game. My team went all out. It was a very intense game. My hands would turn cold and clammy whenever I gained possession of the ball. So I would throw it to my teammates.
Both our teams took turns to score hoops and soon our scores were neck to neck. Now, we really had to go all out. We knew we could not score hoops but we could defend our hoop. We had our best defenders, including me, to defend our hoop and two attackers.
Just as an opponent tried to get the ball and shoot it into our hoop, he accidentally tripped and fell, spraining his ankle.
Thud! He fell to the ground, grabbing his ankle.
“Aah! Ouch!” He cried in pain. His face turned as pale as chalk. But no one seemed to notice him except me since they were all fixated on the ball. I did not know what to do.
Just then, my teammate passed me the ball. I was at sixes and sevens. If I helped him, we would lose, and we did not want to. But if I did not, we would win. There was no time to think, I only had time to act. I passed the ball to my teammate and helped my opponent up. As I turned back, I saw an opponent score a hoop, and that was the end of the game.
I felt guilty about losing because of the opponent but I knew it was the right thing to do. Even though we did not get a place on the podium, the judges called me up for something.
“And..John Tan from…Seng Kang Primary School! Please come up.” I did so, confused by the medal in her hand. It was different from the rest. This one was a platinum medal. “Please come up and receive this medal for displaying sportsmanship. “
I heard a deafening applause even from Sacksville! My teammates cheered for me, even though I was the cause of us losing. The judge hung the medal around my neck and congratulated me. I beamed from ear to ear as I received it. As my teammates and I took the bus home, I recalled the day’s events.
I would never forget the time I showed sportsmanship. I felt as proud as a peacock for showing sportsmanship and hoped that I would show it next year. I decided to always show sportsmanship, even if it means losing. Besides, winning is not everything. I learnt that sports is not just about winning or losing, it also teaches us values, and one of them is called Sportsmanship.
