P2 English: Evaluating grammar rules, comprehension and writing skills

Most schools do not give formal assessments to their Primary 1 and 2 students. This is a good way for young students to enjoy their day to day school life and develop a love of learning! However, students do have review tests/short tests that evaluate if they have understood and are able to apply the grammatical rules, structures and vocabulary learnt in English.

So, as P2 students head towards their P3 year, what areas of the English Language should they have understood and are able to apply as accurately as possible?

P2 English Grammar

Nouns – Singular & Plural and Countable & Uncountable Nouns

Pronouns – Personal, Possessive, Reflexive & Emphatic & Demonstrative

Adjectives – Possessive & Comparative

Tenses

Modals

Prepositions

Conjunctions

P2 English Writing

P2 students should be able to write a story of at least 80 words based on 4 linked pictures

They should be able to write an introduction and conclusion in their stories

There should be at least 4 clear paragraphs in their stories

Appropriate vocabulary based on the pictures should be used in their stories

Students should also be able to use writing techniques such as simple characterisation and idioms in their stories

P2 English Comprehension

Students should be able to read a short text with understanding.

They should be able to display their understanding by selecting the correct answers from the questions based on the texts.

They should be able to answer factual, True and False, as well as Vocabulary in context, questions. P2 students should also be able to infer answers based on their understanding of the text.

The jump in the Paper 2 components from P2 to P3 isn’t a large one and can be bridged over smoothly enough. Writing, however, becomes more complex as students are expected to write a story of at least 120 words and create their own conclusions.

With the increase in the length of the compositions, students need to have accurate sentence structures, tenses and punctuation as Language is 10 marks of the overall score. If a student did not have a good grammatical foundation in primary 2, this will be evident in their writing in primary 3.

This is why, in our P3 classes at Thinking Factory, we begin our year by checking that students have learnt and are able to apply the grammatical structures learnt in P2. We also have weekly writing, to allow students to practice rules learnt and take the time to increase the length and descriptions of their stories.
