Writing is one of the most important skills for Primary 3 students to master. At this stage, they are ready to go beyond simple sentences and begin shaping their ideas into proper paragraphs, complete with characters and meaningful plots.
At Thinking Factory, we guide our Primary 3 students step by step. In the first term, they learn how to plan their plots using a clear structure — an introduction, rising action, falling action, and a conclusion. This gives them a roadmap for their writing and helps them understand the importance of strong beginnings and satisfying endings.
As the year progresses, we introduce more advanced techniques: characterisation, descriptive details, and of course, our trademark “WOW words and phrases” that add colour and life to their compositions
Weekly Writing, Real Growth
Our Primary 3 and 4 students write every single week. It isn’t always easy for younger students to complete a full composition and then move on to Paper 2 practice — but their perseverance pays off. We are incredibly proud of the effort they put in, and even prouder when those efforts translate into strong exam results.
This year, our Primary 3 cohort — who started with us in January 2024 at both our Bukit Timah and Hougang branches — did especially well in their SA2 compositions. Many scored between 15 and 18 marks, a solid result at the end of the year.
Why Start Early?
We strongly believe that starting the writing process early makes a real difference. Regular practice trains students to build correct sentence structures, maintain tense consistency, and pay attention to punctuation. These skills carry over naturally into their Paper 2 components, giving them confidence across the board.
Our students were especially excited when we told them we would publish their compositions as models on our website. With nearly seven outstanding pieces to share, we will be posting one each month to showcase their hard work and creativity.
SA2 Model Compositions
This month, we are featuring two students: one from our Hougang branch and another from our Bukit Timah branch. Both scored 17 out of 20 for their SA2 compositions.
- They carefully planned their plots using the given pictures and title themes.
- They added dialogue, gave their characters names, and used descriptive details to bring them to life.
- Most importantly, they ended with thoughtful reflections on what their characters had learnt.
These compositions reflect not only the students’ diligence but also their growing ability to write with clarity, creativity, and purpose.
Note to students
The model compositions in this blog are to help students generate ideas and to be used as a guide. Students are not allowed to copy the model compositions and then pass them off as their own work, especially in school. It is called plagiarism.
Composition 1
The first composition was based on 4 pictures. The pictures were about a boy who left his plate of half-eaten food on the canteen table instead of putting it in the return tray section. A girl who was looking for a place to sit, suddenly became frightened when a crow swooped down to eat the half-eaten plate of food on the canteen table.
It was a hot and sunny day. Tim and Max were being brought down for recess. “I can’t wait to eat all of the delicious food down there!” Max said. They were both smiling happily. They walked down the stairs all the way to the canteen.
Tim queued for the noodles stall, while Max queued for the rice stall. They sat down on a bench and started to eat. The food was delicious! They enjoyed it a lot. Tim finished his bowl of noodles and returned it, while Max did not finish his bowl of rice and did not return it. “Hey, Tim! Want to play tag?” Max asked Tim, forgetting about what he should do after eating his food in the canteen.
Tim replied, “Uhh, okay!”
They started playing tag. They had a whale of a time while playing tag. A girl was trying to find a seat after buying her food at the canteen. She decided to sit beside her friends. When she got closer to her friends, a crow suddenly swooped down and ate Max’s leftover food left on the canteen table. The crow swooping down made her drop her food and she started crying.
When Max saw that, he realised the consequences of him leaving his leftover food on the table. He told a teacher about the incident and the teacher helped him and the girl clean up the mess on the canteen. Then, he asked Max to apologise to the girl. Max apologised sincerely to the girl.
Max reflected on what happened that day. He was ashamed of what he had done. He would not do that again. Luckily, the crow did not injure anyone. Max learnt a lesson. It was to return his tray and help keep the canteen clean for everyone.
Composition 2
The second composition is based on 4 pictures. A student walks into the school washroom to find two mischievous students playing with water. The title of the composition was given – Staying safe
Staying Safe
It was a sunny and bright morning. Jim was in school, walking to the washroom. When he went to the toilet, the whole floor was wet. It went up to his ankle. It was flooding!
Jim saw that Jill and James were splashing water everywhere. Jill and James were best friends, and they were always was up to mischief. That was why Jill and James always got scolded. Their uniforms were all wet, and the mirrors were all dripping with water. Jim was so shocked that he stood rooted to the ground. He thought, “Oh! What a mess! Why are they always so mischievous and stubborn?” Coming back to reality, Jim knew he had to do something.
“Stop! It is dangerous! Someone can slip and fall and hurt themselves, ” Jim yelled at the top of his lungs. However, they rolled their eyes and continued to play.
“I said stop!” he screamed again. The boys stopped splashing and said together, “You’re not a teacher, you have no authority to stop us.” Then they resumed splashing, they laughed and they left the tap on. Jim had no other choice but tell the teacher about it.
“So class, this is…”
Suddenly Mrs Wong heard a loud bang. Jim came bursting in. Mrs. Wong asked what was the matter and what took him so long. “Jill and James are playing with water, in the toilet!” Jim said, panting after running back from the toilet.
Mrs. Wong asked. “What? Jill and James are playing with water?”
Jim nodded his head. Mrs. Wong’s head became as hot as fire, and her face became as red as a tomato.
“Those two rats!” Mrs. Wong yelled. Mrs Wong stomped into the boys’ toilet. When Jill and James saw Mrs. Wong, they stopped and did not move an inch.
She said, “Detention, both of you! In the principal’s office.”
When they were at the principal’s office door, they were dripping wet from playing with all the water in the washroom. They hung their heads in shame as they were reprimanded severely.
From that day onwards, Jill and James were always obedient. Once bitten, twice shy. There was no use crying over spilled milk. They learnt to be obedient and never play dangerously ever again.
