With the removal of the SA1 in all levels a few years ago, TF has started giving mock tests to all our levels monthly. We may test either Paper 1 or Paper 2 monthly. The purpose of giving our students mock tests is not to stress them.
What are the benefits of mock tests?
Better Exam Preparation
Mock tests simulate the real exam environment, helping students get used to the format, types of questions, and time constraints. Revisiting topics during mock tests helps students consolidate and retain what they’ve learned.
Improved Time Management
Practising under timed conditions teaches students to allocate their time wisely across sections. This is especially important in Paper 1 components.
Practice Reduces Mistakes
Mock tests highlight areas where students lack understanding, allowing for targeted revision. Repeated testing helps students avoid common mistakes and refine their answering techniques.
Last month, we gave our Primary 4 students a Paper 1 Mock Test. The composition theme was on A Kind Deed. They were given a Story Mountain and some Helping Words. They were expected to plan their plot within 5 minutes and write their compositions in 40 minutes. This is what our P4s do every during class time, although planning and discussion are guided. They are also given ways they can develop the theme and writing techniques to jazz up their compositions.
By giving the Paper 1 mock test, the P4 teachers wanted to note how our students planned, developed the theme, and wrote the relevant points related to the theme. They also wanted to see how well our P4 students managed their time.
After marking, each student was given feedback and we discussed on ways they could improve.
Below is the model from one of our P4 students. He has been with us since his P3 and scored 17/20 for his P3 SA2 composition.

A Kind Deed
One sunny Friday afternoon, Sam was walking back from his school to his home. He was walking slowly. He was enjoying his day as he had no homework that day. He was happy. On his way home, he heard a noise. The nose sounded like apples tumbling down.
Curious, he decided to investigate. He turned to see an old lady, and apples all over the ground. He decided to do a kind deed and help the old lady.
Smiling, he asked her, “Can I help you pick up your apples?”
The old lady replied, “Sure!”
Sam picked up the apples one by one and put them in the bag. The old lady thanked Sam and tried to lift the bag of apples but it were too heavy for her. Sam decided to be kind again and helped the old lady carry the bag of apples home. On the way, Sam’s arm started hurting. Sam put the bag full of apples on the ground for a second and lifted the bag back up. Sam wanted to give up but he knew that he had to persevere as she was too frail to carry the bags on her own. The trip was very long. He felt that his arms were going to tear off.
After a few more minutes, he was finally there. The old lady thanked Sam profusely for his kindness. She praised him for being a considerate and warm-hearted boy. Sam blushed and smiled shyly. The old lady even gave Sam a box of cookies. Sam thanked the old lady for the box of cookies, and he walked back home happily.
When he got home, he told the story to his mother. His mother praised him. Sam was very happy that day. He was not only happy, but he also felt that he had done the right thing. He would remember the day that he had done a kind deed.
