Would you contribute to this project?
Yes, I would! I would love to be part of this project as I can do my part to help save the environment and at the same time help less fortunate children. I think this is a great idea. As children who come from affluent homes, we shouldn’t forget those who are less fortunate than us. My mom reminds me of this often. She also reminds me to do my part to save the environment by recycling and not to waste paper or water. I have a number of books at home that I’ve outgrown and they are still in excellent condition. I’m sure someone out there would be happy to receive them and read them.
What are some ways given that we can help save our environment?
Recently my teacher showed me a poster about the 3 Rs plus 2 more. We are all familiar with the 3Rs – reduce our waste, recycle our waste and reuse our waste. These have been emphasized in school and through books and projects. Last year, for our Science presentation my group worked on different ways that we can use plastic and paper. We also showed how plastic can be turned into useful things like highlighters and pens that we students can use in school. The class was surprised by this and some of us now only buy recycled stationery items when we can find them.
The other 2 Rs are replenish and restore. I think this refers to us helping to plant more trees and restoring the natural habitats of animals that we have destroyed. Also, if we take the 3Rs more seriously, it will allow the earth to replenish and restore itself. I read in an article that if we recycle 500kg of paper we can save 8 trees! I will be happy if I can save even 1 tree on this earth. We need to conserve our natural resources. Recently in the news and on social media, there have been videos and news articles about our sea creatures swallowing plastic bags which are polluting the sea. Our wastes are overflowing and polluting our earth and causing other living things to die. Singapore’s landfills are filling up too quickly. We are using too much plastic and not recycling our waste. Very soon Singapore won’t have space for another landfill. We should learn to reduce and recycle products which are not biodegradable.
How do you personally take care of your environment?
I think it is important to recycle. At home, we put all our newspapers, papers, tin cans and plastic bottles in different bags for recycling. The last person to finish drinking from the can or the plastic bottle has to wash it and recycle it. We also reuse paper and sometimes make craft out of them. My sister and I will put our used papers into a box and then take them out to do some doodling or even Math calculations. Recently, I read about zero waste from a book in the public library. I bought a metal straw so that I don’t have to use plastic straws anymore. It came in a nice cloth bag and I carry it with me wherever I go. I have also bought a reusable silicone bag to pack in my snacks instead of using a plastic ziploc bag. We should learn to reduce our waste as there are limited resources on Earth and we need to keep those resources for further generations.
